History of Montezuma Winery
Over 30 years ago, George Martin began keeping bees. It was a family hobby, with the Martin’s producing honey and beeswax products for their own use as well as for commercial and residential sale. The Martins and their bees were well-traveled, spending portions of the year in Florida, South Carolina, and Maine.
The diversity of habitats produced clover, buckwheat, and orange blossom honey. This proved to be an exciting and rewarding hobby for the Martin family, but they wanted to do more with their honey crop. The nearby Renaissance Festival gave them an idea: Mead! George’s youngest son, Bill, created a recipe for Honey Wine, and in doing so became the family’s winemaker. The Semi-Sweet variety impressed the people at the Renaissance Festival, and is still served there every year.
The success of the honey wines convinced the family to pursue the wine industry further, and they added some fruit wines to their list and opened up Martin’s Honey Farm and Meadery in 2000. A year later, it was time to expand, and Montezuma Winery opened. Currently, Montezuma Winery offers a selection of over 30 honey, fruit, and grape wines.
The winery has been awarded numerous Double Gold, Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals for their wines, and has recently been awarded Best Fruit Wine for Blue Moon (Blueberry wine), and Best Commercial Mead for their Semi-Sweet Traditional Honey Wine.
New for the summer 2008, we will begin producing and selling Premium Vodka made from honey as well as Apple Brandy, Honey Brandy and various liqueurs under our sister brand, Hidden Marsh Distillery.
